To kick off the start of summer, HEVI volunteers, alongside other members of the community gathered for a potluck. This event was not only meant to raise funds for our initiative, but to also welcome underclassmen interested in joining our mission.
Alongside the potluck, various activities carried on throughout the evening. The backyard was transformed into a go-kart track, and games of football and spikeball were played. Nearby, other members meticulously folded, rubber-banded, and applied dye to pieces of clothing, hoping to create artistic masterpieces. And off course, it wouldn’t be a summer gathering without water balloons! One of our members became the unfortunate target of a series of water balloon ambushes (but we made sure he didn’t suffer too much).
The setting sun signaled the ending of the potluck, as HEVI’s leadership team– Benjamin, Caden, and Eddie– delivered a short speech about their experience volunteering. Winifred, the previous vice president of HEVI, also made an appearance, and shared his advice on the college process. Being a part of HEVI allowed him to develop relationships with people who had very different life experiences compared to him– all very important in his admission to Harvard. This event allowed for some much needed bonding time, and we hope it's a sign of many more good times to come.
